If the implant placement site has undergone serious bone reduction then a ridge augmentation grafting procedure may be necessary. The bone that has been lost can be rebuilt with this procedure, so that implant placement can take place.

Missing teeth can result in the underlying alveolar bone reducing in both width and height. The alveolar bone is the supporting bone to the teeth, when a tooth is missing it no longer receives stimulation in this area and therefore starts to resorb, or shrink, almost instantly.

There are five pairs of sinus cavities in the skull, of which the most important are the maxillary sinuses. These hollow spaces are located inside the bone above the upper back teeth and below the eye sockets. When the upper back teeth are missing, normally the premolars and molars, the maxillary sinus cavity expands and drops, changing the location to the jaw bone in the area of the missing teeth.

Bone is usually harvested from the hip that is then transplanted into the mouth. This procedure requires hospital environment.
